REINDEER ARE BETTER THAN PEOPLE -Kristoff (Disney's "Frozen")

While we might not entirely agree that reindeer are better than all people, they are pretty dang cool! What's even cooler? Getting to see them up close and personal!

Welcome to Our Family Farm: A Work in Progress

Hello and the warmest of welcomes from our little slice of paradise, where life is anything but ordinary and where every day is a whirlwind of feathers, fur, and, most importantly, antlers! Imagine a place where the grass gets a trim with as much care as a topiary masterpiece, using nothing but a good old-fashioned scythe, and where dandelions are less “yard invaders” and more “reindeer gourmet treats.” Welcome to our world.

Our homestead is a landscape of life and joy, home to a spirited and ever-growing family of animals and kids that enrich our lives far beyond what words can capture. We have our faithful horses, the industrious chickens, and our delightful pigs. Yet, it's our reindeer that have truly turned our farm into a wonderland, each with their own personality and story, starting with Crash and Comet, the pioneers of sleigh-less flights and heart-stealing escapades. As our family of antlered wonders has grown, so too has our excitement for spring, a season that brings with it the magic of calving. This time of year transforms our farm into a live audience theater, where the arrival of each new calf is the main event, eagerly anticipated not just by us but our visitors as well. These moments of new life remind us of the cycle of life after a long hard winter.

Our lawn, a lush tapestry of what most would call weeds of clover, grass, and the beloved dandelions, is meticulously cared for with our trusty scythes, providing a banquet for our reindeer and a playground for the calves. It's also our personal apothecary, bursting with plantain and yarrow, where we play amateur herbalists, concocting remedies that probably wouldn't pass FDA approval but certainly add to the charm of farm life.

The saga of our reindeer began with Crash—who ran over Grandma—and soon after, Comet, who added his own sparkle to the mix. This duo didn't just enrich our lives; they inspired a movement, led by our daughter, who saw in them not just pets but partners in making a difference. During her high school years and into college the trio fundraised to support the homeless children in our community, a testament to the power of love and a little reindeer magic. Our farm is a narrative of joy, unexpected journeys, and the belief that with a sprinkle of creativity, a dash of daring, and a whole lot of heart, anything is possible. It's a place where every animal has a name, every season brings new adventures, and where the legacy of compassion and community service is passed down, just like the art of scything the lawn or welcoming new calves into the world.

So, step into our quirky, chaotic, heart-filled world, where life is celebrated in all its forms, and where every day is an opportunity to spread a little more love, laughter, and the occasional reindeer kiss. Welcome to our farm, a place where magic doesn’t just exist in fairy tales but grazes in our fields and gallops through our hearts. Join us in this ongoing story where we’re not just raising animals, but hope, joy, and a future where every creature, big and small, finds a place to call home.

3rd Generation reindeer wranglers-in-training

  • What is included in the Educational Course?
The educational course consists of 1.5 hour classes once a week spread over 3 or 6 weeks. They are geared towards middle school and up with options for younger and more advanced learners. Email us at KenaiReindeerFarm@gmail.com or by filling out the form on our Contact page for more info.
  • Where is KRF located?
Kenai Reindeer Farm is located in Nikiski, Alaska. Since we live on the farm we don't give out our address until booking is complete.
  • How do I book an encounter?
You can book a nature walk, educational course, and/or a personal or business event by emailing us at KenaiReindeerFarm@gmail.com or by filling out the form on the Contact page.
  • When can we book an encounter?
Right now! Nature Walks are typically booked in the summer and fall months: May-September. For the best dates, Holiday Season business events are typically booked 2-4 months in advance. Fill out the form on our Contact page or email us directly at KenaiReindeerFarm@gmail.com for a personalized quote.
  • Can I visit with my service-dog?
The short answer is No. According to the ADA, there are certain exemptions for spaces open to the public as stated here: https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html (Q25-Q26). “If admitting service animals would fundamentally alter the nature of a service or program, service animals may be prohibited. In most settings, the presence of a service animal will not result in a fundamental alteration. However, there are some exceptions. For example, at a zoo, service animals can be restricted from areas where the animals on display are the natural prey or natural predators of dogs, where the presence of a dog would be disruptive, causing the displayed animals to behave aggressively or become agitated.”
  • Is the walking tour suitable for children?
This interactive reindeer/foraging walk is more suited for teens and adults than toddlers and elementary aged children. If you do decide to bring your kids, please keep in mind that they must be supervised at all times. In addition, children under 4 must be in a backpack carrier for their safety. We do offer 3 and 6 week classroom education with interactions with the reindeer that is suited for elementary children and up.
  • What should I wear?
While Alaska is known for its cold temperatures, the most important thing to keep in mind is staying dry. We will be walking over uneven terrain, therefore recommend wearing sturdy boots or walking shoes. To keep the mosquitos at bay we recommend wearing socks, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and repellent.
  • How long is the walking tour?
The walking distance itself is not long, and we will walk at a leisurely pace as we explore the foraging opportunities. However, you will be outside for over an hour. For this reason, we highly recommend you come prepared for the cold or wet weather and dress accordingly.
  • I don’t have a reservation. Can I drop by?
Because the farm is also our home, we, unfortunately, cannot accept walk-ins. Our tours are available by reservation only and can be booked by emailing us at KenaiReindeerFarm@gmail.com
  • Where are you located?
We are in Nikiski, Alaska near Fire Station 3. After we have finalized your tour, you will be given directions and instructions on where to meet.
  • What’s the deal with sheep and goats?
Sheep and goats can carry a deadly spore, which turns into Malignant Cathharal Fever in Cervidae Deer Populations. This spore is airborne, and can live on your shoes and clothing. We ask that you avoid contact with sheep and goats at least one week before your tour. Please wear clean shoes/boots and fresh washed clothing when you visit.
  • Can I pet the reindeer?
If they let you, go ahead! Let them come to you, don’t chase them or move towards them. Please keep in mind that while our reindeer are tame, they are not trained.
  • How long is a farm tour?
Our guests spend about 2 hours on average here. Typically the first half hour is education, paperwork, and getting everyone set up for the tour.
  • Group discounts, field trips?
At this time we do not offer group discounts or field trips. Due to the unique nature of this experience, we find it best that children are directly accompanied by their parent/guardian for safety reasons.
  • How early can I arrive?
Please arrive no more than 10 minutes before your scheduled tour time.
  • What happens if it’s raining and cold? Do you cancel the tours?
Alaska is a land of harsh beauty. What may be bad weather to you, is another day of farm life to us. However if it looks like the weather will be extremely inclimate, we will be in contact with you and either reschedule or refund the tour amount.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
We know travel plans change, and sometimes it is necessary to cancel your visit. Because of this, we will issue a full refund if you cancel your reservation at least 48 hours before your scheduled tour, no questions asked. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds for cancellations made after this period.
